No matter what your relationship status, Valentine’s Day is a holiday on everyone’s radar. Children celebrate it by making and exchanging cards; adults celebrate it with chocolates, flowers, and dinners. Ancient Romans celebrated fertility in mid-February, and in the 5th century, the Pope declared February 14th as a day to remember Saint Valentine who was a Christian martyr. Valentine’s Day wasn’t associated with love and romance until the 1300’s, but since then, it has become a huge commercial holiday.
About 36 million boxes of heart shaped chocolates are sold for the holiday, along with 150 million Valentine’s Day cards. When it comes to buying gifts, men usually spend more money with an average of $150, while women spend around $75; however, the most expensive gifts are not always the best. Receiving a gift that is simple but heartfelt is often the most memorable. Celebrating Valentine’s Day with children is as simple as making heart shaped sugar cookies and frosting them with pink or red frosting. If you’re looking to buy flowers for a sweetheart, mixed flowers are the most popular, followed by red roses, and on February 10th The Vow hits theaters just in time for date night. No matter how you celebrate this holiday, remember that love is meant to be shown year round, not just on the holidays.
